How Do You Track a Courier Shipment?

As a business owner or representative, you have many responsibilities to fulfill. Keeping track of your shipments is just one of them. When you send out an item using a courier company, however, it can be challenging to keep tabs on where your shipment is and when it will arrive at its destination. Fortunately, there are several ways to track a courier shipment that are easy and convenient for anyone who needs them:

Finding the online tracking system

Once you’ve found the tracking number, use it to find your shipment on the courier’s website, app, email, or SMS.

If you don’t know how to do this yet, don’t worry—we’ll walk through an example of finding a tracking number in each medium.

1. The courier website: Find your tracking number on the courier’s website, then enter that code into the “Track my Order” box located on most courier websites’ homepage (see image below).

Enter the tracking number

In order to track a courier shipment, you will need the tracking number. This can usually be found on the courier’s delivery note (if they gave you one) or at the bottom of your invoice. Alternatively, it may also be printed on the outside of your package so it is visible without having to open it.

The tracking number will look like this: [15-20 digits]. It consists of a string of letters and numbers separated by dashes or hyphens (examples: 123456789123456 and 123-456-7890).

Read the details of your shipment

When you log in to your shipper’s website, the first thing you want to do is review the details of your shipment. The details will include information about where and when it was picked up, who delivered it, what condition it was in when it arrived (if applicable), and more.

Here are some things you can expect from this section:

  • Date and time of delivery
  • Location of delivery
  • Delivery status (complete or incomplete)
  • Methods available for tracking package progress (e.g., GPS tracking)

Sign up for email or SMS notifications

Sign up for email or SMS notifications so you can be notified of your shipment’s progress. You can select to receive these notifications when the shipment is:

  • In transit
  • Received and accepted by the courier (if applicable)
  • Delivered to the address specified in your delivery instructions
  • Delivered to an alternate delivery address (if applicable)

Once that’s done, go to the courier company’s website and find their tracking system in there.
